At last I remember this day in 1973. I think it was also the day I tried to go into the city but failed due to lack of energy. I had only travelled two stops on the train before getting off to go back home, feeling quite bad.

What I do remember is going to the train station. Just around the corner from my parent’s house, in Freshwater Road, a car came along. It hit a sparrow just as it passed me, the driver probably didn’t even notice, he just drove on. I, however, saw the bird hit the ground and that it was alive but badly injured. I thought about rescuing it, or putting it out of it’s misery. I ignored it, and carried on to catch the train.

Not only did I feel ill on the train but I was filled with regret. I should have done something. As I returned home I saw it once again, it was dead, but had obviously suffered for a while.

What was really odd, and that probably disturbed me as much, was that the sparrow lay dead in the road on the exact same spot where my dog had died thirteen years previously. Fluffy, my dog, had been run over by a lorry after seeing something tasty in the road. Until then she never left my side.
